What MS Excel function do I use to make words have a numerical value?

I have a long list of states labeled as abreviations (i.e TX, CO, ND, etc) in a spreadsheet. I would like to display how many I have of each state. For example, if the list has 4, TX, 2 CO, and 6 ND, I would like the totals on the bottom to say TX 4, CO 2 and ND 6. Thanks for your help!
