Is faith more than just a euphoric feeling or a decoy?

whenever something goes wrong, you're told that you didn't have enough faith or because the lord works in mysterious ways. what makes it any different than being a devout jew or muslim if it's merely a diversion to get your mind off your problems or get a good feeling instead of offering practical solutions to problems?
